If you’re a musician, and interested in promoting your music online, then you should read this.
Most people think that advertising is just about getting their name out there. They often spend a lot of money trying to promote themselves, without actually seeing any measurable results.
They’re basically just throwing something at the wall and hoping it sticks.
This approach is very common and it’s understandable why people fall into this trap. It’s the same approach that huge corporations like Coca-Cola and McDonald’s use. If it works for them it should work for you, right?
Unfortunately, no.
The reason why this approach (commonly referred to as a “shotgun” approach to marketing) works is due to the incredibly large advertising budgets of these companies. Coca-Cola spends over $3 Billion a year on advertising.
So unless you have millions of dollars to spend on “getting your name out there”, you should probably take a more effective approach.
That approach is called direct response marketing.
What Is Direct Response?
Direct response marketing is a strategic approach to advertising that will get measurable results telling you exactly how effective your campaigns are.
With direct response marketing you can see the exact results of any given campaign. You can look at how much it’s costing to run an ad on Facebook, and you can see exactly how much money you’re making in return on that very same ad.
This is an especially effective approach if you’re selling online guitar lessons.
The bulk of your marketing budget will be most effectively spent using online ad platforms like Adsense, Facebook, and YouTube when promoting online lessons. All of those platforms have extremely detailed analytics that will provide you with realtime feedback showing exactly which ads are getting you the best return on your investment.
You can easily split-test various ads and opt to only run the ones that are working best for you. So rather than just spending money on advertising and hoping that something’s working, you can actually see what’s working best and make educated decisions on how to allocate your marketing budget.
In a recent article I wrote on the topic of direct response marketing for musicians, I break down direct response marketing in more detail. If you’re interested in learning more about how to promote yourself using this marketing approach, I highly recommend that you check it out.
