It is not always easy to take your guitar playing to the next level (some find it easier than others) especially when you have mastered some basic strumming techniques and songs but find yourself saying “so what next?”
Not only is this common, but it is an issue that seems to be rarely addressed, with many tutors dismissing such comments by insisting more practice and constant drilling will eventually pay off. In some instances this may be the case, but does that sound like fun to you.
To help you strummers that want to experience something more, but without having to leap across the Grand Canyon in one go, Andy has devised 3 simple, yet effective, routines, that combines strumming with an element of string picking, either as a link between chords or as a turnaround.
Initially, this will seem challenging, but because Andy is focusing on short pieces, that are both memorable and clearly structured, you will be able to break everything down bit by bit and at your own pace; eventually building up speed to play along with the backing tracks.
If you are new to combining chords and string picking, it will help you co-ordinate you left and right hands in a way you will probably not have experienced before and provide a great platform for practice routines that will also enhance your muscle memory.
As usual, the tabs are below, which provide you with an additional tool to be able to work your way through these 3 pieces based on:
1. A C/Am/F and G riff
2. A riff loosely based on Feelin’ Groovy by Simon and Garfunkel
3. A classic turnaround in the key of E.
Enjoy – and if you want more of the same, just let us know.
